Additional Information: The East Bay Conservation Corps (EBCC) is a multi-program nonprofit educational organization located in Oakland, California. The EBCC engages and prepares young people as capable and caring citizens in creating healthy communities. Since opening its doors over 20 years ago, the EBCC has been an innovative leader in serving youth and communities through education reform, youth development, environmental stewardship, and service. The EBCC’s comprehensive program model enhances participants’ academic, leadership, employment and life skills, self-esteem, civic responsibility, and environmental awareness. Through service-learning, students apply and advance their academic learning through serving their community. This arrives at the heart of the civic mission of public education: educating and preparing individuals to be active, contributing members of our democracy. The EBCC serves youth ages 5-24 through a variety of program models, all of which focus on youth development and education through service-learning and civic engagement. The EBCC’s flagship program, the Corps member Charter High School Program, offers youth ages 17-24 a meaningful education through service-learning programs that focus on environmental stewardship and community service. The Project YES (Youth Engaged in Service) AmeriCorps Program is the EBCC’s school-based service-learning and national service program, offering opportunities for students to engage with their communities and providing technical assistance to teachers. The EBCC’s newest initiatives are the Institute for Citizenship Education and Teacher Preparation and the Elementary Level of the EBCC Charter School, which together aim to develop successful, replicable models for service-learning and citizenship education from kindergarten through high school graduation. The oldest and largest regional urban corps in California, the EBCC was established in 1983 and selected two years later by Public/Private Ventures as the “best practices model” for the Urban Corps Expansion Project, which resulted in the establishment of 17 more urban conservation corps throughout the nation.

Description: Services provided by KIDS Consortium include: mini-grants to support student-led projects; professional development workshops and materials for educators; resources and support for school district-community leadership teams in over 40 communities who work to fully integrate service-learning experiences into the academic curriculum; and regional gatherings to bring students and teachers together to share their successes and learn new skills. We provide two free newsletters each year which are mailed to almost 5,000 individuals involved or interested in our work. We also maintain a website where we provide free resources and information about service-learning. Major annual events organized by KIDS include: Student Leadership Summit: In March of each year, KIDS hosts an annual Student Summit, a 2-day event for over 300 students from our partner schools (held at the University of Southern Maine). At the Summit, students share their projects and community impacts with each other, learn about issues in New England communities, develop new leadership and project skills, and network with each other. Regional Teacher Workshops: Each year, KIDS holds a variety of professional development workshops for educators and youth workers. Our workshops are designed to provide “step-by-step” guidance for implementing a KIDS service-learning project and related civic education programs with youth. “Hall of Flags” Exhibition and other events for youth at the Maine State House: Each year, we provide opportunities for Maine students to share their work on community needs and public policy issues with lawmakers in Augusta. From a “Hall of Flags” exhibition to more formal presentations and discussions with legislators and other policy-makers, students see first-hand how policy decisions are made and how they can have a voice in the process. “Systems Thinking” Conference: Another major element of our work is providing support for over 40 school-community leadership teams. Each year, we bring hundreds of education leaders together to focus on strategies and policies that can be implemented throughout their “system” to ensure that all students in their schools have opportunities to make a difference in the communities where they live.
