Texas Summer Service-Learning Institute
Transforming Learning, Cultivating Leaders

Who should attend: Teachers, coordinators, administrators (and high school students for special youth track)
Cost: Varies.

Teachers, coordinators, and administrators are invited to attend interactive presentations by Cathy Berger Kaye, Jim Toole, Helen Stiff Williams, Kids' Consortium, and Texas Parks and Wildlife, as well as sessions on finding and writing grants. The diverse opportunities to network with your peers, consult with the experts, and take part in meaningful service-learning activities will allow each participant to tailor this experience to their own needs. Attendees are also invited to enjoy an evening of exhibits, dinner, and an engaging speaker at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Find out more about our sessions and speakers.

Working in teams of three, high school students from all over the great state of Texas will come together to participate in service-learning projects designed by high school students for high school students. A night of team building, leadership training, project planning, and just plain hanging out is planned to prepare youths for the next day’s projects. Youths will be able to showcase their service-learning expertise in the fields of environmental stewardship, social action, or technology. Spots for the Youth Track are limited, so get your team together today!

Who Should Attend?
The Institute is appropriate for educators new to service-learning as well as experienced service-learning practitioners who wish to expand their 'toolbox' and reinvigorate their practice.

Overview:
Based on the award winning KIDS as Planners service-learning model, discover the steps in creating a quality service-learning experience in partnership with students and community organizations. This Institute will be an interactive, collaborative learning experience, with experienced practitioners sharing their creativity and expertise. Institute participants will develop project ideas integrated with curriculum requirements and assessment models, and practice strategies to build a collaborative environment in the classroom and help students reflect on and celebrate their work.

Institute Goal and Outcomes:
Teachers and other educational practitioners will leave the Institute with an understanding of the steps in the KIDS as Planners service-learning model and a wealth of resources and strategies for designing, implementing, and assessing quality service-learning projects with young people in grades K-12.

Location:
The Institute will be held at the The Hilton Garden Inn Auburn Riverwatch, Auburn, Maine. The Hilton Garden overlooks the Androscoggin Falls and River in the heart of downtown Auburn. The hotel is minutes from Bates College, a short drive to Freeport Outlet Stores, LL Bean and the picturesque coast of Maine. The Portland International Jetport is just 35 miles south. CiviConnections Summer Workshops
Oak Ridge Conference Center, Chaska Minnesota

Social studies teachers, supervisors, and professors are invited to apply to attend this workshop to learn about how to give an in-service presentation to 3rd-12th grade teachers interested in conducting CiviConnections projects. The workshops begin at 4 pm on the first day and end at noon on the last day. CiviConnections involves conducting local historical inquiry on a topic of student/teacher choice and then designing and carry out a service-learning activity.

Interested participants must submit a letter of application that includes all of the following:

  1. the name of the applicant
  2. your workshop choice or order of preference
  3. a statement indicating that within one year of attending the workshop you will give an in-service presentation (minimum of two hours) to at least 5 teachers in your district or region
  4. a statement indicating who will pay the travel costs to the T3 workshop (either the individual applicant or the school district or sponsoring organization)
  5. signatures of the applicant and the applicant's supervisor (e.g. for a teacher include the signature of the principal or district administrator)

Designing and Delivering the Ultimate 21st Century Curriculum

Who Should Attend: K-16 teachers, community educators, administrators, and program trainers and leaders.
The Institute provides training, models, strategies, and resources for developing service-learning as an integrated feature of curriculum with clear links to standards.

We emphasize service-learning best practices and incorporate the principles of education for sustainability. Interactive training includes opportunities for dialogue with experienced practitioners and peers. Structured planning and reflection time is provided for individual and group work.

Institute Faculty
Our faculty comprise a large multistate group of experienced practitioners with diverse backgrounds. Faculty members share tools and exemplars and are available for direct support to participants throughout the week.

Outcomes
Participants develop a deepened and practical approach to service-learning, as well as an integrated service-learning instructional or site plan that meets their own unique school or program needs. Opportunities for post-Institute support are available.

Professional certificates for 65 hours will be issued upon successful completion of Institute work. Three graduate credits are optional.

Receipt of your registration will be confirmed via email or letter. Approximately two weeks before the Institute, you will receive a packet with maps, a schedule, and a pre-Institute reflection to complete and return prior to the Institute. Strategies for Success with Literacy: An Innovative Learning Process for Improved School Culture and Student Achievement through Literacy & Civic Engagement

Who Should Attend While the curricula is aimed at implementation in grades 4-10, K-12 teachers have benefitted from attending prior Institutes; K-12 administrators, alternative and gifted educators, after school providers, also teacher education faculty and pre-service students. The Institute provides a hands on comprehensive experience preparing attendees to implement high quality service learning programs and this innovative research-based curriculum that integrates literacy development with character education and service learning. Connection to academic standards will be articulated.

Overview Introducing Strategies for Success with Literacy, an innovative curriculum designed to engage students for academic excellence. The program combines research-based strategies from the fields of literacy, service learning, civic development/citizenship, and social emotional learning. Its value-added approach helps students become more academically and civically engaged; acquire traits associated with positive character; develop civic skills; and increase their literacy skills. The program has been implemented within the Los Angeles Unified School District for three years; 2007 implementation will reach 19,000 students entering grades 6 and 9.

Sample Curricular Objectives include helping youth who participate to:

  • Improve and strengthen study and homework skills;
  • Become more effective in their use of time;
  • Acquire greater literacy-related knowledge and skills;
  • Create more mutually supportive and respectful relationships;
  • Contribute to activities that benefit others;
  • Develop competence in making deliberate responsible choices;
  • Have greater confidence and competence in their ability to meet challenges;
  • Apply learning to a novel situation related to contributing to the common good.
Program Themes include Developing Skills, Strengthening Relationships, Meeting Challenges, and Growing Community. Teachers are provided with a comprehensive curriculum guide with ample room for creativity within a framework. The curriculum includes literature selections (teacher copies of books included), engaging activities, creative projects, questions, and reflection prompts. A Student Guide is provided.

The program is designed to be implemented within:
  • Transition program from students moving from elementary to middle and middle to high school
  • Academic course grades in Language Arts/English; can be combined with aspects of Social Studies; Life Skills, and may be used in single grade classes
  • Advisory curriculum for middle school through ninth grade
  • Alternative education curriculum, middle and high school
  • After school programs
  • Youth groups for academic enrichment with creative teaching and learning methods
